Components of Road Section |
What are the Components of Road Section?
These are important as they influence the safety comfort and efficiency movement of traffic.
The minimum values for all these cross-sectional
elements are available.
Diagram show various component of road section which
will be explain individually:
Typical Cross Section of Road:
Right of Way: It is the land acquired for the road; it should
accommodate all the components of road section.
Road Margin: The various cross-sectional elements of the
road except the carriageway or pavement width, service road, shoulder, footpaths
are the parts of road margin.
Formation width: The whole width of road which includes
median, lanes, verges and shoulders.
Side Slope: The Transverse slope respect to the horizon
connecting shoulder to the storm water drained to drain the water.
Berm: It is a barrier provided to help prevents the erosion
of embankment of soil into the storm drain.
Carriage way (C.W): the width of road on which vehicles
movements is allowed and it is comprised of one or more carriage ways.
Service Road: it’s an alternative road constructed between
a road and buildings facing there on and connected only at selected points with
carriage way.
Shoulder: it’s provided on both side of the road edges. Its help accommodate stopped and accommodated vehicle and provide lateral supports for base and surface course.
Camber: it is the slope provided to the carriage way to raise middle surface of carriage way. Its helps drain off water from the road surface into the side drainage system.
Kerb: it helps indicate the boundary between the carriage way and the shoulder or islands or footpath. Its also help in confinement and stability to the base course.
