What is Interior Design?

Interior design is the art and science of improving the interior of a building in order to create a healthier and more attractive environment for those who use it. The way we experience spaces is fundamental to interior design. It is a powerful, necessary part of our daily lives, influencing how we live, work, play, and even heal. Interior design at work creates comfortable homes, functional workplaces, and beautiful public spaces.

An interior designer plans, research, coordinates, and manages such home improvement projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that entails conceptualization, space planning, site inspections, programming, research, communicating with project stakeholders, construction management, and design execution.

Designers create environments that anticipate our needs and appeal to our emotions, drawing on a diverse set of skills and technical knowledge. Interior design has evolved dramatically since its inception as a profession in the early twentieth century.

The best interior designers make it appear simple.

Interior designers are expected to be knowledgeable about the following topics:

  1. Textiles, materials, color, interior design, sustainability, and more
  2. 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software applications, as well as building information modeling (BIM)
  3. Building codes, structural requirements, and health and safety concerns

Interior designers nowadays collaborate with contractors, architects, engineers, craftspeople, furniture dealers, and business and homeowners.
