What is Brick Masonry? Advantages and Disadvantage of Brick Masonry?

The term masonry mean building of structure form Individual units and it can also refer to the unit themselves. The most common material which are used for masonry structure are brick, stone, concrete block, marble, Granite, glass block and limestone. Masonry is generally high durable form of construction. However, the quality of masonry structure depends on the workmanship, quality of binding material (mortar) and the material used in masonry. In masonry structure the pattern in which the units are assembled can affect the sustainability and durability of the overall masonry structure.

The main advantages and disadvantage of brick masonry are as follow:

Advantages:

  • Highly economical as its raw material is highly available.
  • Very strong and durable
  • Fire resistant
  • Can design flexibility
  • Very low maintenance cost
  • Required less skilled labor for installation.
  • Good strength for ordinary construction.

Disadvantages:

  • Low tensile Strength
  • Absorbs water making motor mix dehydrated.
  • When exposed to sun for long changes the color.
  • Further requires plastering and painting.
  • Can cause degradation in extreme weathers.
  • Strong foundation is must usually RCC
  • Requires constant care and maintenance.
