What is Raft foundation? When raft foundation will Be Use?

Raft foundation is the type of shallow foundation which is also called Mat foundation. The type of shallow foundation in the form of single continuous slab that covers the entirety of the base of building.

Mat or raft foundation support all the load of the building structure and transmit them to the ground in equal magnitude.

Sometime soil condition does not allow to design any other foundation and only one option that’s raft foundation. Since this type of foundation distribute the structure load from the building uniformly over the considerably large area.

Raft foundations are generally preferred to when the area required for individual footing is more than 50% of total area.

Raft foundations are generally preferred when individual footings are unfeasible due to its low bearing capacity.
